Storage Ideas For Children Sharing A Room

Space is often limited when you have small children and it is not uncommon for many brothers and sisters to share a bedroom. Sharing a room can be a fun childhood experience, but it can also be difficult as children grow and develop their own personalities and tastes. It can also be hard to keep a shared bedroom clean and organized. There are a number of decorating and children's toy storage ideas and tips to help you create a bedroom both children will love.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Before decorating your children's shared bedroom, talk to each child individually about their favorite colors, decorating ideas, and plans for the room. Discuss various kid's storage options and let your children help decide ways to store their things to make cleaning up easy. Also find out from each child what they think their sibling will want the room to look like and discuss compromises they may both like.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

The most important thing to remember for children sharing a bedroom is to give each child enough personal space and room for personal things. Bunk beds are a great space-saving way to give both kids a personal sleeping area, or two beds can be used, if space allows, for a more separated feeling. Let each child choose their own bedding and try to incorporate their preferred decorating colors near their bed.

Divide your child's shared bedroom into three obvious sections. You may choose to decorate each area in your child's chosen theme or divide the room with folding screen dividers. Each child should have a personal area with plenty of children's storage for toys, clothing, and other items. The remaining area should be a shared section of the room. The shared area may include an activity table or desk if there is not enough space in the separate areas, and should have kid's storage for shared toys and games.

If space allows, give each child her own dresser or other children's storage option for clothing. If your children share a dresser, consider giving each child individual drawers in the dresser and maybe even paint the drawers in fun themes each child likes to avoid confusion. Other ways to incorporate each child's favorite colors and decorating ideas into their shared bedroom is to use colored kid's storage bins or toyboxes [http://www.monkeyshine.co.uk/toy-storage-solutions-20] for toys or even stamp colored handprints along the wall in their personal area.

Provide each child with their own personal kid's storage for treasures and items they want to keep private. Night tables with a drawer and shelf are great for notebooks, journals, favorite toys, and books. A personal shelf beside each bed will work just as well for children sharing bunk beds or a room with limited space. Locking boxes for each child will allow privacy for their individual treasures. Children's storage bins that hide away beneath the bed are also a great way to give each child their own storage space.

An organized shared bedroom can help separate each child's personal things and give them each more privacy, but it may not end the cleaning difficulties. Be sure your children's shared bedroom has a convenient waste basket and plenty of kid's storage. At least once a day, have both children do a quick cleanup of their section of the room, as well as the shared section. Help them learn how to clean quickly and to go through their toys on a regular basis to get rid of broken things and items they no longer play with.

Ideas For Pirate Fancy Dress Costumes

Pirates make great subjects for fancy dress parties and are suitable for young and old alike. The outfits are very versatile as you can improvise by cutting up old clothes to make them look ragged, or you can buy custom made pirate fancy dress. Many accessories are available, such as fake moustaches, beards, eye patches and cutlasses.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Pirate outfits were a popular choice for fancy dress costume parties long before Johnny Depp made the pirate look a sexy one. Whilst the swash-buckling Captain Jack Sparrow look-alike is an obvious choice and will always go down well, there are other pirate outfits you can choose from.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

For example, you could dress as Captain Hook, the villainous pirate chief and captain of the Jolly Roger in J. M Barrie's Peter Pan. Hook is now a traditional pantomime character, whom we all love to hate and boo and hiss at. Captain Hook is a great character for pirate fancy dress. He wears a long red coat, Buccaneer boots, black breeches, a white frilly shirt and a black "Tricorn" hat with a white feather. You will also need a long black curly wig and a fake hook hand. In the story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook's hand was bitten off by a crocodile. The crocodile liked the taste of Hook so much, that its aim is to eat the rest of him! As the crocodile also swallowed a loudly ticking clock, Hook always knows when the crocodile is near.

Another great pirate fancy dress costume is Long John Silver. He is the villain of the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and is most like what we think of as a traditional pirate. Long John Silver is perhaps most famous for two things - his wooden leg and his parrot. He is obsessed with looking for the treasure that his former comrade Billy Bones hid. Now it might be a bit difficult to imitate a wooden leg, but a crutch would do and you can buy toy parrots of various types.

If you want to dress as a real pirate from history, then the most notorious and feared of them all is the legendary Blackbeard. He was the original pirate of the Caribbean and is the subject of many films and books. Apparently, his appearance was so terrifying that his enemies often surrendered just at the sight of him. To look as terrifying as Blackbeard, you will need a long, bushy black beard. It is said that Blackbeard used to separate his beard into tails, tying each with a different colour ribbon, so this is something you could do for authenticity to enhance your own pirate outfit. It is also said that Blackbeard carried a sling across his chest which contained three pairs of pistols and that he carried a cutlass and several knives in his belt. Fortunately, there are plenty of fake cutlasses, pistols and other accessories you can buy to enhance your pirate fancy dress costume.

Nursery On A Budget

When putting together a nursery on a budget, the first thing is to think about safety. While it is much less expensive to borrow, or buy used baby items, they don't always meet the most current safety regulations, so be sure to check out safety guidelines before buying or borrowing nursery furniture. But with that said, one of the best ways to do a nursery on a budget is to buy gently used items.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

To find a great collection of slightly used furnishings, look at swap meets, tag sales, and garage sales as soon as you know you'll need baby things. This will give you ample time to collect, and to find items that go nicely together. Buying secondhand items is a great way to save money, and it is smart. It is especially smart for the items like a bassinette, walker, baby bath, or jumper, as they are only used for a short period of time. They will generally be in great condition, even if they are used, and your child will grown out of them quickly, so it makes no sense to spend a ton buying something new that they will only use for a short time anyway.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

The next thing to consider when trying to put together a nursery on a budget is the longevity of your purchases. Chances are if you are on a budget now, you may be on one later as well, so why not look ahead and select furniture and furnishings that will convert to good use as the child grows from infancy to the toddler stage. By planning ahead you will really be able to justify your purchases, and that planning will pay off in the future. You'll only have to buy once, so even if you spend a little more, in the long run you spend a lot less!

Another great idea for decorating a nursery on a budget is to choose colors for the nursery that will coordinate with the colors of toys. That way the toys you purchase will become decorative items themselves, which saves you money, and makes the room coordinate well.

When it comes to a nursery on a budget, the best way to save lots of money is to do as much of the work as you can yourself. Paint furniture, sew curtains and quilts, paint the walls, and put up wallpaper. One of the biggest expenses in decorating is the labor, so the more you can do yourself, the more you'll save. Also, if you will consider painting a crib, it opens up the possibilities of which cribs you can purchase; you may be able to purchase a less expensive, or used crib in the wrong color, and paint it to go with your décor.

Use the largest portions of money in your nursery budget to buy things that will last through childhood, or at least for the first few years. Invest in a good bed and chest of drawers, but borrow or shop at discount stores for everything else, as they quickly become unneccesary.
Another great idea for decorating your nursery on a budget is to register for the items you need to decorate. People use registries for weddings, and some use them for baby showers, but not many. So take advantage of this useful tool, and let your friends know that you have registered for some things that will enhance your chosen room theme, they will be more inclined to use your registry if they know you are really excited about the things on it.

Think longevity in all your purchases, including paint colors. Use baskets, drawers, and shelves to store toys, clothing, and other infant essentials, as these can later be converted to store books, coloring and drawing tools, and other items your child will have as they grow and their interests change.

Storage Solutions For Kids Toys

The boxes and chests on the market today are large enough to store many different types of toys. From stuffed animals, board games, dolls, trains and puzzles, toy boxes make storage easy and fun for kids. With that said, there many companies that manufacturer this product and the styles and options are endless. Education is important when shopping for the perfect toy chest, and these suggestions outlined below may help make your buying decision easier.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

The first decision you will need to make is deciding if you are willing to assemble at home or if you want to purchase one already built. Many furniture stores, boutiques, and toy stores stock toy boxes that are already assembled. Most will even sell the floor display model to there customers. If you are handy, then you may want to consider purchasing a ready to assemble model. These are usually pre-cut, usually sanded, painted and waiting to be assembled by the consumer. The directions are included with all of the parts, nuts and bolts you will need. The online shopping stores have over a 100 different styles to choose from and the best selection. Another option, is to purchase a set of plans or blueprints. If you are an experienced carpenter you might want to start from scratch which means, cutting your own boards, sanding, gluing, painting and build it entirely by yourself.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

The second thing to consider is the finish on the toy box. There are many finishes that are available on the wood, such as cherry, honey, white or natural. Take into consideration the furniture in your child's bedroom or playroom. Do you want to match the finish or look at different contrasts that will compliment your decor. There are hand-painted styles that feature whimsical designs or cutouts. The themes available today vast, including farm animals, sports themes (like hockey or basketball toy chests), jungle animals (such as zebras, giraffes, and bears), plus much more! Finishes should be lead free.

Think about whether you prefer a traditional Kids Toy Box or a unique toy chest. Are you looking for one that doubles as a bench for extra seating. Several include the option for a padded fabric seat cover. One feature to consider is mobility, does it have casters. This makes it easier to move around the room. Pay attention to the size, as it will vary by designer and style and you will want to make sure it will fit in the space available. Measure carefully so there are no surprises when you set up your new toy box.

And lastly take a look at the construction and safety features. Safety hinge on lid protects young fingers from getting pinched and cut-outs on the side or front will also help prevent finger pinching. Surfaces should be smooth to prevent splinters and all finishes including paint and stains should be lead-free. Make sure the style is built strong and sturdy, worthy of being passed down from generation to generation.

Kids Room Storage - 5 Great Space Saving Tips

Space Saving Tip #1 - Peg Boards

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

For all of those toys in your child's room that don't really have a place to call home, a creative way to save space and eliminate clutter is to purchase an inexpensive peg board. Paint it the accent colour of your childs' room and then neatly hang all those odds and ends. Examples may be things such as barbie accessories or stuffed animals that seem to be all over the place. For smaller items, find a cloth tote bag, place items inside and then hang on pegs. For stuffed animals, you could also use a tote bag to put them all in or you could hang some individually that have some type of neck collar or tag. This colorful peg board becomes an attractive piece on your childs wall, allowing them to see all their toys and have an easier time choosing what they'd like to play with. Another great thing to hang up would be sports equipment. Baseball bats, baseball gloves, hats, etc.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Space Saving Tip #2 - Storage Crates

Fully maximizing the space in your child's room means trying to find furniture that serves multi-purposes. A great example of this is to get a wooden crate, 4 caster wheels, a small piece of plywood or particle board and a piece of fabric that accents the room. Attach caster wheels to bottom of crate. Then have plywood cut to the opening size of the crate. Next wrap top of plywood with the fabric, using a stapler to fasten to the underside of the plywood. If you would like a more cushioned top, first wrap with a medium thickness foam before fastening fabric.

There you have it. A perfect storage place for toys or puzzles or books and also a little seat. If you like, you can paint the wooden crate to match the room.

Space Saving Tip #3 - Simple Mug Rack

A simple mug rack, hung low in the child's room, can serve as a hitching post for miscellaneous possessions, such as belts, hats, necklaces, and gloves. A great place to hang the rack would be on the back of or behind the bedroom door. Belts, hats, ect are neatly organized but out of sight.

Space Saving Tip #4 - Covered Toy Boxes

If you're in the market for a good-size stuff holder, steer clear of the uncovered toy boxes you'll come across in many stores. They just collect dust in addition to an unsightly jumble of toys and books that eventually spills onto the floor. Choose clear plastic boxes with snap-on lids. They allow your children to see what's inside. They also make great space maximizers, since most are stackable.

Space Saving Tip #5 - Kid Friendly Storage

Consider purchasing open-front stackable bins that will keep toys off the floor where they might cause someone to trip, yet let kids retrieve playthings without assistance. Stackable units are a blessing if your child has more toys than one bin can hold.

Tow toys that don't get daily use in a large plastic box. Because kids can always keep an eye on the contents, they probably won't protest. Stash boxes of second-string toys in the back of a closet or under a bed.

Consider an attractive toy chest to house frequently used toys. It can also be a sturdy seat for parents to sit on while helping kids get dressed in the morning. But make sure the chest has a lightweight or removable lid that won't slam down and hurt a child.

Shallow wicker baskets, the kind adults use to sort mail, are equally efficient for storing toy soldiers, action figures, and stray dinosaurs. For added kid appeal, purchase baskets in bright, eye-popping colors.

A to Z and Back Again! - 26 More Activities for You and Your Child

Aa...Allowance is a rare thing these days. Let your child match socks for a dime. Maybe he could put away clothes for a nickel. Letting a child earn a little here and there teaches responsibility. Make a list of all the things the child can earn money for. Do not pay your child as a way of getting him to do things though. That defeats the purpose of learning.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Bb...Banks can be made out of anything. An oatmeal container, a can with a plastic lid, anything that can have a slot cut into the top will make a perfect change bank. Let your child decorate the outside of the container. By saving up money, your child can learn how to make her money add up.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Cc...Collecting can be fun and very inexpensive. First, talk with your child and discuss what to collect. Get a notebook or an album to keep the collection in. Have relatives in other places send additional items for the collection. Make sure that you write in who sent it and the date. Years from now your child will love going back through the book.

Dd..."Do's and Don'ts" is a neat game. You tell your child a "do" thing...Like do brush your teeth before bedtime. Then, let your child tell you a "do" thing. Next, tell your child a "don't" thing...Like don't talk to strangers. And so on. You can even make this a silly game with a statement like, "Don't stand on the roof with peanut butter on your toes." Children love silliness.

Ee...Egg coloring can be done at any time of the year. A few drops of food coloring in a glass of water with a tablespoon of vinegar will create some beautiful eggs to dress up a lunchtime table. Help your child to mix the colors to come up with new ones. Make sure the eggs have been boiled and are completely cooled before hand.

Ff...Feet and hands are fun to trace and can be made into a lot of different pictures. Let your child trace your hand...Then let him turn the hand into a picture of a turkey. See how creative you both can be. A foot tracing can be made into a radical streetcar! Neat, huh?

Gg...Go for a nature walk with your child. Take along a pencil and a notebook to write down all the amazing things you'll see. Squirrels running up a tree or a big butterfly are beautiful sights. When the walk is over, read what you've written down. Then you and your child can draw pictures of what you've seen. Put the pictures in the notebook to look at later.

Hh...Hula-hoops are something that not all of us have a talent for. However, they don't have to be used for spinning around your waist. Lay it on the ground and see how many times you both can jump into the circle and out of the circle. Let your child pretend it's a steering wheel in the world's biggest car. Vroom all around the house! Your child will find a zillion different things to do with a hula-hoop.

Ii...Illusion games are a blast! Drape a sheet over an open doorway. Set up a lamp behind the sheet so that it creates a shadow onto the sheet. Take turns with your child holding items up behind the sheet and then guess what the item is. Make sure your child knows not to touch the lamp.

Jj...Jungle animals make a variety of sounds and noises. Play a game of "Jungle Charades" with your child. Take turns acting like an animal, making the appropriate noises. Remember, you are only allowed to do the movements and noises that the animal would make. Parents usually have a hard time because we look so silly doing this but this is a great chance to cut loose and laugh with your child. Just a quick note, children are usually better at guessing and acting out than the parents are.

Kk...Kangaroos hop, crabs walk sideways, and elephants swing their trunks. How many animals can you and your child imitate? Can you come up with an animal for each letter of the alphabet? It's not totally impossible! Let your child make up some animals and what their movements would be. Maybe they will be an eight-legged monkey from the hidden reaches of the world! Nothing is too outrageous when you're imitating animals.

Ll...Let your child be the teacher and you get to be the student. What will you learn today? Make sure you raise your hand when you have a question. Children love to be in charge. This will also encourage your child to be a leader.

Mm...Make a picture using your toes to hold the pencil. Can you write your name this way? Can you draw a picture with your toes and a crayon? Children love to try new things and this task is often very comical.

Nn...Newspaper is a great art medium. Mix a small amount of flour and water to make a thin paste. Tear the newspaper into strips and dip them into the paste. The newspaper will be pliable and can be squished and shaped into any form. Let the creations dry for five days. Then you can paint and color your creations.

Oo...Overnight parties are a fun treat. Have a special slumber party! Let your child stay up with you and play games, watch a movie and eat popcorn. Your child will love the extra attention. If your child is older, let a friend or two stay over also.

Pp...Play a game with your child. When was the last time you played Hide & Seek? How about Tag? Or even Ring-Around-The-Rosie? Try to think of games that you played as a child. Children love to do things we did as children!

Qq..."Quiz Me" is a neat game. Have you child put an object into a paper bag. Your child says, "Quiz me". You ask "yes" or "no" questions until you have properly guessed the item. Switch positions and let your child be the quizzer.

Rr...Races have been around forever. Get creative with different kinds of races. Race bubbles in the air. Race pudding on a plate. Almost any item that has movement can be raced.

Ss...Snakes can be made out of almost anything. Sockie snakes are easy and fun. Take a sock and draw eyes on it. Then put it onto your hand and make it talk. You and your child will have wonderful "snakie" conversations with your sockie snakes. Make sure you exaggerate the "sss" sounds.

Tt...Take a minute each day to tell your child how important he/she is to you. One compliment every day will build a lot of self-esteem in your child.

Uu...Use an old album or notebook as a memory book. Let your child put pictures, stickers and special items in it. Write a caption next to each item so that you can reflect back with your child. Add to the book often.

Vv...Various game pieces from old games can be used to make up a new game. Go through the toy chest and old games to see if there are any stray pieces there. Put the collection on the table and let your child help you create a special game for just the two of you. Each time you play, come up with new rules.

Ww...Whistling is a very hard thing to learn. So instead of whistling, hum! Make kazoos out of cardboard tubes. Place a square piece of wax paper over one end and secure it with a rubber band. Then hum into the open end. Your child will love making up songs with you.

Xx...Xylophones are so pretty. Make your own with your child by taking cardboard tubes and taping them side by side. Place an assortment of jingle bells into each one. When tapped by a wooden spoon, each tube will make a different ring. Let your child color the tubes to make a colorful creation.

Yy...Yellow is a bright and sunny color. Draw pictures with your child of all the things that are yellow. Then hang the picture in a not so sunny place to brighten it up. You'll both smile sunny smiles every time you pass the picture. Maybe next time can be a Purple day or some other color that your child loves!

Zz...Zebras are black and white. The best hiding spot for a zebra would be in a newspaper. Where can other animals hide? This is a great creative imagination game! Maybe a green frog could hide in the lettuce and a polar bear could hide in your vanilla ice cream. Let your child have fun with this game.

There are so many things that children love to do. One of their favorites is spending time with a loving parent. Make sure that you're there for your child.

Until next time...

Stay fun and hug your precious little one!

Every Girls Room is Her Castle So Give Her the Princess Furniture & Princess Room Decor She Deserves

Many little girls dream of themselves as being princesses, if they don't already believe themselves to be princesses in their waking life too. That is why princess furniture and princess room decor have become so popular, and on the top of most young girls' wish lists for the design of their own private castles.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

There are now girls bunk beds and loft beds designed in the shape of castles - with turrets and all. And because these princess beds are custom made, a parent can be sure that the unique children's furniture they're getting for their daughter is as unique as she is.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Once you've selected the princess castle bed you plan to have built for your little girl, you'll have an easy time finding princess bedding to match. Pillowcases, sheets, blankets, comforters, even bed skirts can be found in all sorts of matching princess theme designs to compliment the color scheme, style, and - if appropriate - the specific Disney or storybook characters inspiring the princess castle bed you have in mind.

In fact, to make this most-personal of childrens beds even more personal to your little girl, you can even have her help select her own bedding and other accessories. Little girls love to design their own space - they're little interior designers, each one of them - and participating in the colors and design scheme of her own princess bedroom furniture will make her feel like the special little princess she is, and will make truly make her feel like this new bed is her own.

Maybe she'd like to see flowering vines with colorful blossoms bursting forth from them, climbing up the sides of her castle bed. Or maybe she'd like an authentic granite stone surface instead. Or perhaps she's more attracted to a solid pink exterior that glitters in the light at certain angles. And does she want a drawbridge, a waterfall, or windows included as well?

There are certain practical aspects of a castle bed's design that a little girl might also like to be involved in. For example, does she prefer girls bunk beds, with a sleeping area above and below, or would she rather have a loft bed with a playing area beneath it. Or, on the flip side, would she instead prefer to keep her mattress on the lower, floor level, and have the upper level act as a balcony for playing? How to get up and down between the two levels is also a consideration. Ladders, stairs, climbing walls, and slides are all options to choose from, with even more exciting possibilities available when included in combination.

Other princess bedroom furniture to consider that seems to compliment princess beds well are dressing tables, settees, and of course, a comfy chair to call her "throne". Kids bedroom decor that go hand-in-hand with princess beds include an enchanting mirror, flattering lighting, a soft floor covering, like a plush throw rug, and a menagerie of stuffed animals and dolls to act as her make-believe attendants.

Fortunately, many of the design elements of princess castle beds and accompanying princess furniture and princess room decor can be built right into the bed itself - storage, for example. Princess beds can have drawers, shelves, closets, display cases, and chests built into them for storing your little girl's wardrobe, toys, plastic jewelry, dolls, dress-up clothes, and other trinkets and accessories befitting a princess.

There is so much to juggle: Santa Clause, reindeer, Christmas stories, and of course, presents! Many families have a great time staying home, preparing a big dinner and enjoying time in the house with relatives during the holidays, while other families prefer visiting their out of town relatives. But if you have a family that simply can't be held to tradition and instead enjoys the hustle and bustle of holiday travel to an exciting vacation destination, then get ready to meet your match this season with some great adventures that will make your children want to come back for more!

Great Places to Visit

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

Hersheypark in Hershey, PA - If you've never heard of the city, I know you've heard of the chocolate. That's right, they man behind some of the best tasting chocolate in the world created a city centered around candy many years ago, and now, this great city wants your tummy to be the next one hurting from a chocolate overdose on this great holiday travel vacation destination.

Affectionately known as "Chocolate Town USA" Hershey, PA owns Hersheypark, which is a fabulous amusement park that is normally closed in the winter; but for the holidays they reopen for "Christmas in Candyland." There your children will have a ball riding in your car under the "Hershey Sweet Lights" two-mile holiday lights show. In addition, they will love Hershey's holiday musical, the Teddy Bear Jubilee, and the family party on New Year's Eve. Your family can either stay in Hotel Hershey, a hotel with a kids club, or the Hershey Lodge, which includes the Santa Package (breakfast or lunch with Santa Clause). This trip will make your children's holiday travel dreams come true - and maybe yours too!

Legoland Christmas Parties - If you are looking for some extreme holiday travel, and are up for venturing outside of the country, then you will want to head out to Legoland in Windsor, UK. Just by the name alone you know your children are about to have a blast. But to tickle your senses some, I will tell you about this great location. Smell the delightful mix of spices and scented oil lamps as you feel your feet make their way across a wooden bridge that is surrounded by the sounds of trickling nearby fountains. As you look around, you notice the beauty of bright and exotic colors and you realize you're in Heaven. For children, Heaven is Legoland, and for you, Heaven is a happy child. So for this vacation, you both get your wishes.

When you visit Legoland, get ready to be dazzled by fun Belly Dancers, exciting Sword Swallowers, and adventurous Fire Eaters. After enjoying this great show, you can have fun on at the Camel Rodeo. And if you are able to escape the children for a while, you can enjoy playing a great game of Arabian Wheel of Fortune and later relax in the intimate Kasbah. No matter the choice, this destination is guaranteed to please the young and the young at heart.

Tips for Traveling with Your Children

As you know, holiday travel with children, especially those younger than 10, can be an adventure within itself. Often, they are not easily entertainment and have short attention spans. So a car trip (or long flight or train ride for that matter) can be more than a notion for them. The best way to anticipate possible tantrums from the frustration of feeling claustrophobic is to plan ahead as much as possible.

Try a Travel Agent - I know sometimes it feels great to stick out your chest and say you were able to single-handedly plan and execute the perfect trip, but sometimes, no matter how tailored your planning is, it's hard to catch all of the details because you simply don't know everything. This is why, when traveling with multiple children, it is a good idea to consider an agent for your holiday travel. Their job is to plan trips; they know what's going on around the country and can help you keep your children entertained while en route to your final destination. If you're driving, they can give you great stop-off points that will be best suited for an entire family. And if you're flying, they can provide tips on the easiest ways to manage children and security in the airport.

Pack a Separate Bag for Your Children - It is a good idea to pack a bag that has goodies and entertainment for your children in a second bag. If they're old enough, they can keep the bag near them, whether in the car or on a train or plane. The bag can contain their favorite teddy bears, stickers, toys, (washable) markers, paper, coloring books, crayons, pillows, or anything else you can think of that will help them feel comfortable while in the midst of holiday travel.

Bring Along a Portable DVD Player - I know this sounds so 21st century and may take away from the tradition and sentiment of holiday travel and family time. But let's get real for a second. You're traveling with children of the 21st century who are used to a TV in every room, and having their own DVD collection and a computer. If you want some happy children traveling with you, you need to bring along some of their favorite movies. A little Dora the Explorer or Spider Man has never hurt anyone, and I guarantee, during the 2 or more hours they're watching their movies, you won't hear as little as a peep out of them.

Make Frequent Stops - As an adult, you've probably grown accustomed to sitting in a cramped car without complaining, but children have not advanced to this stage yet, so if you don't stop and let them run around you can certainly plan on some whining and griping during your holiday travel. A travel agent can come in very handy at this stage because they can advise you of different fun places to visit during stops in various cities. But if you want to bypass the agent and do it yourself, you can map out where you'll be stopping and find fun places on your own on the Internet. And if you can't find anywhere else, you can always stop at a McDonald's Playland. Remember, they just want to stop and play; they're not too particular.

Engage Them While Traveling - Traveling a long distance provides the opportunity to spend quality time with your children. So this is a great time to sing with them, tell stories and point out exciting places, historical buildings and even unique cars passing by. Believe it or not, when they reach a certain age, they begin to remember these trips as magical experiences simply due to the adventure of holiday travel. Why not make it more exciting for them by letting them know how marvelous and unique our country really is?

Holiday travel with your children can evolve into an exciting adventure for both you and your children if you know the right places to visit, and make sure to plan ahead for the long trips (or short ones for that matter). Just remember, holiday travel is only once a year, so make a strong effort to make it as memorable and loving as possible. Your children will never forget the time and attention you gave to make them feel special during this special time of the year.

A Place For Everything

So, you've made the decision to get organized, you've sorted through your belongings and you now have only items that you love and are usable. This may be for one small area of your home, a few areas, a drawer or two, or the whole house. However much you have done, it is an accomplishment no matter how big or small, so congratulations!

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

A very important aspect of being and staying organized is to have a place for everything. If you don't have a place for everything, then it all starts piling up again and pretty soon you're keeping everything because it's hard to tell what's what and what's where. Here's the scenario: You don't have a home for anything and whenever the mail comes in or you go shopping, you just put the items wherever you find room. Pretty soon, you have a mess! Believe me, I know; I've been through it.

Kids Wooden Toy Chest

I urge you to put some thought into making a home for every single type of item that you keep; this is so important! If you bring something new and different home and you don't have a place for it, make a place for it immediately or as soon as possible. If you don't have room, you'd better get sorting again. Here are a few suggestions on how and where to store some common items found around the house.

In the office:

Paperwork: A filing cabinet is a huge lifesaver when it comes to organizing your paperwork. I made files for every type of paper I had lying around, from movie reviews to our house papers and this has made my life a lot easier. I put these files in alphabetical order in my filing cabinet and now everything is put away, but even more thrilling is the fact that I can actually find a piece of paper in about five seconds! This is a huge improvement for me when before, I wouldn't even know where to begin searching for a piece of paper let alone have success in finding it.

Magazines: Cereal boxes are very handy for keeping magazines neat. To make a magazine holder out of a cereal box, cut off the top inch or so of the box, then, starting at one side of the top and cutting at a downwards angle, cut down half to one third the height of the box. Do this on the other side also and you will then have a magazine holder. At this point, you can decorate the holder by pasting pretty magazine pictures on it or painting it, then adding lace or ribbon. You can also put magazines in big wide wicker baskets.

Coupons: I have found envelopes very handy for storing coupons. Just label them the way you'd like them labeled (alphabetically or by type of food) and put your clipped coupons in them. The envelopes can be stored in a recipe or card file box of appropriate size.

In the closet:

Blankets: Laundry baskets make excellent holders for blankets that sometimes fit awkwardly on shelves.

Shoes: An over-the-door shoe hanger is a great way to get shoes off the floor.

Travel bags, purses and totes: Plastic storage bins are very handy for storing these.

In the craft room:

Crafting items: See-through plastic storage bins are a very good container for this because you can see where your items are and thus find things quickly.

In the living room:

Remote controls: A great way to store these is in small wicker or wire baskets.

Odds and ends: We use a wooden chest as a coffee table and it's handy because it doubles as storage. We keep some of our collectibles in there along with craft pattern books and other odds and ends. Another idea for this is to put a wooden or glass circle on top of a new garbage can. You would then drape a decorative tablecloth over the top of the circle. The garbage container can then be used to store your odds and ends and you would also have a decorative table for fresh flower arrangements or knick-knacks.

In the bathroom:

Miscellaneous items: Wicker baskets are great for storing a lot of items in the bathroom. You can put all your hair styling aids in a large one, washrags in another and cosmetics in another.

Medicines: For the medicine cabinet, I bought short, plastic drawer organizers that fit the shelves just right. I have one for headache medicines, one for cold medicines, one for owies (band-aids, ointment, etc.), one for stomach medicines, etc. This not only makes it easier to find items, but it also makes it easier to wipe the shelves when they become dirty.

Toilet Paper: I crocheted a toilet paper holder to hang right above the toilet, so when someone runs out of toilet paper, there should be a roll in the holder for easy retrieval. You may be able to find one of these at a craft bazaar.

In the Bedrooms:

Miscellaneous items: Under the bed storage organizers are great for storing seasonal clothes, Christmas wrapping supplies, gifts to give, books, and other items.

Kids Toys: The see-through plastic bins are great for toys because the kids can see what goes where. You can also mark the bin with a picture or word.

Crayons: Save baby wipe containers or coffee cans to store crayons in. If using a coffee can be sure there are no sharp edges to cut the children.

Once you have accomplished making a place for everything, you only need to train yourself and family members to put things away in the appropriate places.
